Anti-Aging Body Treatments

April 25, 2016

Anti-aging body products are everywhere! In fact, your patients are probably reading about them in your waiting room. Do any of them work? Which ones are worth investigating? Which do you use?

In today’s “What’s on Trend,” we asked Drs. Marc Darst, Joe Niamtu, Kevin C. Smith, Hema Sundaram, Carl Thornfeldt and Julie Woodward for their insights.

Dr. Woodward recommends two products as part of a body regimen, “I sometimes use the Renewnt for Strength and the SkinCeuticals Body Tightening Concentrate.” Renewnt is formulated for dry, thinning skin on the hands and forearms, while the Body Tightening Concentrate is designed to minimize the appearance of dimples and cellulite on stubborn areas of the body, such as the thighs, abdomen and backside.

Keeping it simple is Dr. Niamtu’s preferred way to go. “Really simple for men and women – and I believe makes a noticeable difference – are Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash and In-Shower Body Lotion. My dermatologist, Jo Bohannon, turned me on to these and I have used them very successfully in my practice. Since both products are used in the shower, they are particularly beneficial for the less motivated patients, especially men. They are affordable, over the counter and go a long way.”

As someone who has suffered from incredibly dry skin his entire life, Dr. Thornfeldt created Epionce Extreme Barrier Cream. “It has the consistency of body butter so it is very hydrating, but because it helps repair the skin barrier and stops inflammation in the skin, it also provides anti-aging benefits. This product has been a lifesaver. For my patients that prefer a lighter formulation, I recommend the Epionce Renewal Enriched Body Lotion.” It is specifically formulated for fighting signs of aging “on the body – arms, legs and torso – and provides great hydration.”

In speaking with Dr. Sundaram, she made the point that while we often think of many products as being specifically for use on the face, often the ingredients and benefits are perfectly well suited for the body as well. One such current favorite is Teoxane RHA Advanced Age Defense Cream. “It contains crosslinked Resilient Hyaluronic Acid (RHA). What makes it stand out for me is the noticeable improvement in skin luster and tone after only a few days of use, and that these clinical improvements are evidence-based.”

She also loves SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2, for which she was also involved in the research. Again, she points to the clinical and scientific data showing significant improvements in skin barrier repair and function, starting only 24 hours after application. “It’s an exciting step forward to be customizing our topical therapies in the same way that we’re now customizing aesthetic procedures.”

Dr. Darst reminds patients that daily use of sunscreen is the best anti-aging product not just for faces, but for bodies. “I advise all of my patients, especially the young ones, to apply sunscreen to the face, neck, décolleté and back of the hands every single day even if they do not think they are going to go outside that day. I then tell them to look at their mother’s friends’ chests and see what they don’t want to have when they are 40 or 50.” Lastly, he leaves them with the quote that he heard from Derm World, “The hands don’t lie.”

In regard to sunscreen (which Dr. Smith like to have patients layer over a Tretinoin 0.01% cream in the AM), he reminds patients of three things.  The most important of which is that they find a sunscreen they LIKE it, so they’ll wear it every day.  Second is to let them know is not necessary to spend too much.  “There’s NO correlation between price and quality for sunscreen.” Lastly, he tells patients that “ANY SPF level is OK, because they’re all so good these days. Don’t get hung up on the numbers.”
